Learn What To Do If You Accidentally Drive Your Car Into Deep Water

Posted on

When the roads become flooded, there are some people who make the mistake of thinking that the water is not as deep as it is and end up getting their cars either stuck in the water or washed away when the current picks up. If you made this horrific mistake and are watching your car drift away in high waters, you will need to contact a tow company to secure your car when the water level lowers so that you can make a claim to your insurance company. The guide below walks you through a few things you need to do if your car has been submerged in deep water.

Contact Your Insurance Company

The first thing you need to do is contact your insurance company and let them know what the situation is. They will let you know if towing is covered in your insurance policy and if it is, the agent will let you know which local company you need to hire.

You Need to Know the Make and Model of Your Car

When you call the towing company, you need to know the make and model of the car. The company can use that information to determine approximately how much it weighs so they know which piece of equipment they need to bring with them to pull the car out of the water. A crane or winch will often be used to pull waterlogged vehicles from deep water.

Know Where You Want the Car to Go

Once the towing company gets the car out of the water, you have to let them know where you want the car to be taken. There will be no way for a repair shop to repair it because the entire engine will have been submerged in water and flooded. You want to be sure that the car is taken somewhere that is easy to access though, because an insurance adjuster will have to come and inspect the car to verify that it was in fact submerged in the deep water. It is often best to have the car towed back to your home.

Once the car is back on solid ground, an insurance adjuster will come and assess the damage that has been done to the car. The agent will let you know if the damage is covered under your policy and if it is, the agent will let you know if the company will give you money to put toward a new car.
